Lesson Practice

Today's lesson — "I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts." — invites you into a deeper experience of the Course's central teaching. As with every lesson in the workbook, the emphasis is on application rather than intellectual understanding. Let the idea for today accompany you throughout your day.

Begin your practice periods by repeating the idea slowly to yourself. Then close your eyes and let your mind be still for a moment. Don't try to force any particular experience — simply hold the idea gently in your awareness and notice what arises.

Throughout the day, return to today's idea whenever you remember. Each time you apply it — especially in moments of stress, conflict, or uncertainty — you strengthen your connection to the peace that lies beneath all surface appearances.

Key Themes

  • Thoughts: This lesson touches on the Course's teaching about thoughts, inviting you to explore what this means in your direct experience.
  • Oneness: This lesson touches on the Course's teaching about oneness, inviting you to explore what this means in your direct experience.
  • Mind: This lesson touches on the Course's teaching about mind, inviting you to explore what this means in your direct experience.
  • Relationships: This lesson touches on the Course's teaching about relationships, inviting you to explore what this means in your direct experience.

Practice Notes

  • Repeat the idea for today slowly and with intention at the start of each practice period
  • Close your eyes and sit quietly for a moment after repeating the idea
  • Apply the idea specifically to situations and people throughout your day
  • Don't judge yourself if you forget — simply return to the idea when you remember
  • Let the practice be gentle and without pressure

Contemplation

Sit with today's idea for a few quiet moments. There is no need to analyze or understand it intellectually. The workbook's approach is experiential — understanding comes through practice, not through thinking about practice.

What would your day look like if you truly held this idea in mind? How might your responses to people and situations shift? Let these questions rest lightly in your awareness without demanding answers.

From Walking the Workbook

Beloved, a companion to yesterday's lesson, restated at the level of thought itself.

The thoughts we have are not, the Course says, sealed inside our skulls. They reach. They affect. The minds we encounter are responding, in ways neither we nor they can fully see, to the character of the thoughts we have been thinking.

This claim has been controversial in the history of the Course's reception. It can sound like magical thinking. The Course's point is more careful. It is not claiming that thoughts directly cause physical effects. It is claiming that minds, at the level the Course is concerned with, are not as separate as they appear.

We do not have to believe this on Day Nineteen. The application is the practice.

For today. Apply the idea. Allow the lesson to do whatever quiet work it does without trying to verify it.

[Intro] (quiet) it doesn’t stop with me… [Verse1] Every thought I let remain doesn’t fade or disappear I can feel it moving past something more than what is here I was thinking it was mine like it stayed inside my mind but it moves beyond the line every single time [Pre-Chorus] it doesn’t end where I begin [Chorus] I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) every thought is reaching out further than it seems I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) everything I hold inside moves through everything [Verse2] Every pattern that I keep leaves a trace I can’t erase I can feel it in the way it reshapes another space I was calling it my own like it lived in me alone now I see it moving through everything I do [Pre-Chorus] it doesn’t stop it carries on [Chorus] I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) every thought is reaching out further than it seems I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) everything I hold inside moves through everything [Solo] [Bridge] (soft) if it moves beyond me… then I’m never separate [Final Chorus] I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) every thought is reaching out further than it seems I’m not alone in what I think (not alone, not alone) everything I hold inside moves through everything [Outro] not alone…
