The Real World vs. Illusions in ACIM

The Real World vs. Illusions in ACIM

The Course distinguishes between the world we see through the ego's eyes and the "real world" — a state of perception where forgiveness has removed every block to love's awareness.

The Ego's World

The world we normally see — full of conflict, scarcity, competition, and death — is what the Course calls the ego's world. It's not that physical objects aren't there, but that the meaning we assign to everything we see is filtered through the ego's lens of fear and separation.

In the ego's world, bodies are identities, death is real, the past determines the future, and love is scarce.

What the Real World Is

The real world is not a different physical place. It's this world seen through different eyes — through the eyes of forgiveness. When all grievances have been released, what remains is the real world.

In the real world, you still see bodies and objects, but you no longer use them to attack or defend. You see the light in everyone. You experience peace regardless of circumstances. The real world is the last step before God takes the final one and lifts you into perfect knowledge.

Getting There

The workbook lessons are designed to gradually shift your perception from the ego's world to the real world. Each act of forgiveness, each release of judgment, brings you closer.

You don't need to see the real world all at once. Even momentary glimpses — a flash of peace, a moment of seeing someone with pure love — are the real world breaking through.

The Course assures us: the real world is as close as our willingness to forgive.
