Lesson Practice

This lesson turns attention inward, from objects to thoughts. Close your eyes and watch whatever thoughts cross your mind — worries, plans, memories, judgments. To each one, apply: "This thought about ___ does not mean anything. It is like the things I see in this room."

The Course is making a radical connection: your thoughts are as meaningless as the objects you've been observing. Not because thinking is pointless, but because the ego's thought system — based on the past, on fear, on separation — has no real foundation.

This can feel unsettling. We identify deeply with our thoughts. But the lesson isn't saying you are meaningless — it's saying the ego's thought system doesn't reflect reality. There are thoughts of a different order that do mean something, and you'll learn to recognize them as the workbook progresses.

Key Insight

Your ordinary stream of consciousness — the ego's chatter — is as empty of real meaning as the objects in your room. Recognizing this creates space for thoughts inspired by something beyond the ego.

Practice Notes

  • Close your eyes and observe your thoughts without choosing them
  • Apply the idea to each thought as it arises, naming it briefly
  • About a minute per practice period, three times today
  • Don't try to stop thinking — just label each thought as meaningless

Reflection

Take a moment to sit quietly with today's idea. There is no rush. Let the words settle into your awareness without forcing them to mean anything specific. Trust that understanding will deepen naturally through practice.

From Walking the Workbook

Beloved, the Workbook moves from objects to thoughts.

We notice the thoughts and apply the idea to them. This thought does not mean anything. That thought does not mean anything. The Course is not asking us to suppress the thoughts. It is asking us to apply the idea.

This is a strange exercise, meant to feel strange. The mind treats its thoughts as the most important things in the room. The Course is gently suggesting they are not what we have been taking them to be. They are, in the Course's view, the running interpretation of a mind that has been interpreting for as long as we have been thinking.

For today. Do the lesson. Notice the small jolt when the mind catches itself applying this thought does not mean anything to a thought that, until a second ago, felt important.

[Intro] (soft) they just keep coming… [Verse1] Every thought I hold onto Feels like something that is true Running circles in my head Like a line I never question I repeat it, play it back Turn assumptions into fact Like I need it to be real Just to justify the feeling [Pre-Chorus] But what if it’s just noise? What if it’s not my voice? [Chorus] These thoughts don’t mean anything (anything, anything) They come and go like anything (anything, anything) I don’t have to believe every little thing I think These thoughts don’t mean anything [Verse2] Every pattern that I see Feels like it belongs to me But it’s moving way too fast Like it’s never built to last I was holding onto air Like there’s something really there Now I’m watching from a space Where it doesn’t have to stay [Pre-Chorus] What if I just let it pass? What if I don’t make it last? [Chorus] These thoughts don’t mean anything (anything, anything) They come and go like anything (anything, anything) I don’t have to believe every little thing I think These thoughts don’t mean anything [Bridge] (soft) I don’t have to chase it I don’t have to hold it I don’t have to name it I can just let it go [Final Chorus] These thoughts don’t mean anything (anything, anything) They come and go like anything (anything, anything) I don’t have to believe every little thing I think These thoughts don’t mean anything [Outro] anything… anything…
