Lesson Practice
"I am never upset for the reason I think." This is one of the workbook's most practical and frequently referenced ideas. Whatever is bothering you right now — a difficult coworker, financial worry, health concern, relationship tension — the Course says the real cause of your upset is not what you think it is.
The surface problem is always a screen for a deeper issue: the belief in separation from God, from love, from your true nature. Every specific upset is a variation on this single theme.
Today, think of specific things that are upsetting you and apply the idea: "I am not upset about ___ for the reason I think." Include small irritations and large concerns alike. The Course treats all upsets equally because they all share the same cause.
Key Insight
Every upset, regardless of its apparent cause, stems from the same root: the mind's belief in separation. Specific causes are the ego's way of keeping you focused on the screen rather than the projector.
Practice Notes
- Search your mind for current sources of upset, large and small
- Apply the idea to each one specifically: "I am not worried about money for the reason I think"
- Three to four practice periods today
- Don't try to figure out the "real" reason — just acknowledge the stated one isn't it
Reflection
Take a moment to sit quietly with today's idea. There is no rush. Let the words settle into your awareness without forcing them to mean anything specific. Trust that understanding will deepen naturally through practice.
From Walking the Workbook
Beloved, today the Workbook turns a corner.
For four days, the lessons have been loosening. Today, for the first time, the Workbook makes a claim about the source of upset. The source, the Course says, is not what the mind thinks it is.
Apply the idea to specific upsets. The argument. The annoyance. The fear about next month. I am never upset for the reason I think. The Course is not denying that the events occurred. It is denying that the events are the source of the upset.
This is the Course's central reframe, said in many ways over the year. Today is the first time.
For today. Apply the idea to one or two specific upsets you have noticed. Sit with the sentence. Let it be strange.
