Lesson Practice

This lesson deepens yesterday's: not only are you never upset for the reason you think, but you're upset because you're seeing something that isn't actually there. Your perception is showing you a world of threat, lack, and separation — and that world is a projection, not reality.

When you feel upset about something — a person's behavior, a situation, a memory — the Course says you're reacting to your own projected image, not to what's actually present. This is a form of hallucination that the ego normalizes.

Practice by looking at your current upsets and acknowledging: "I am upset because I see something that is not there." This isn't denial of your feelings — it's questioning the accuracy of what you think you're seeing.

Key Insight

Upset is always a response to a misperception. The world that upsets you is a world you are projecting — and since it's projected, it can be seen differently.

Practice Notes

  • Apply to both current upsets and general unease
  • Be specific: "I am upset about [name/situation] because I see something that is not there"
  • Three practice periods, about a minute each
  • Don't try to see what IS there yet — just question what you think you see

Reflection

Take a moment to sit quietly with today's idea. There is no rush. Let the words settle into your awareness without forcing them to mean anything specific. Trust that understanding will deepen naturally through practice.

From Walking the Workbook

Beloved, yesterday named what upset is not caused by. Today names what it is actually about.

What upsets us, the Course gently suggests, is not the event itself. It is what the mind has seen in the event — meaning, intent, threat — that may not actually be there. The boss's tone. The friend's silence. The mind read those in a half-second, and produced upset based on what it read.

The Course is, on Day Six, beginning to ask: what if we cannot, in fact, fully trust what our mind is reading into the moment?

For today. Apply the idea. When upset arises, ask quietly: Am I upset because of what actually happened, or because of what I have seen in what happened? We do not have to answer. The asking is the practice.

[Intro] (soft) why does it feel so real… [Verse1] I felt it rise without a sound Something heavy pulling down Pointed fingers in my mind Like I knew the reason why I traced it back to what I saw To something said or something wrong But underneath it all I feel Something doesn’t line up real [Pre-Chorus] What if I’ve been chasing something that was never really there? [Chorus] I’m upset, but I don’t know why (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) I’m holding onto something that I made inside my mind I’m upset, but it’s not real (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) If I stop and really look there’s nothing here to feel [Verse2] I built a meaning in the space Turned a moment into weight Gave it power, gave it life Let it take me for the night Now I’m seeing something shift Like it’s starting to unstick All the things I held so tight Don’t feel solid in the light [Pre-Chorus] What if I don’t need to fix it? What if I just let it go? [Chorus] I’m upset, but I don’t know why (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) I’m holding onto something that I made inside my mind I’m upset, but it’s not real (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) If I stop and really look there’s nothing here to feel [Solo] [Bridge] (soft) I thought it was something outside something I couldn’t control But it’s fading now and I don’t have to hold it [Final Chorus] I’m upset, but I don’t know why (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) Everything I held onto is fading in a different light I’m upset, but it’s not real (not the way I thought, not the way I thought) If I stop and really look there’s nothing here to feel [Outro] not what I thought…
